Summer is here!

Summer is known for bright colors, fun, and the beach! And if your anything like me, you enjoy summer but aren't exactly a fan of the heat or humidity. But that doesn't stop us from doing things we love, right? That includes photo sessions. And some of the best ideas can only happen in summer. Living in a tourist city, the boardwalk looks so different during all 4 seasons. In inspired me to look at the differences and take advantage of this summer by listing off some fun, themed ideas for your next photo session paired with some tips to stay cool in the heat!

Slaying the heat

  1. Stay hydrated! During the session, you'll be moving around, bouncing from area to area and having fun! Make sure to bring water with you. And maybe a cloth or small towel if your a sweater.
  2. Consider a small battery-operated fan or a misting fan to give a little extra relief during the really hot days.
  3. Sunscreen. If you have fair skin like me, you know the deal. Keep your skin protected if your session is in the middle of the day, at the beach, or anywhere the sun will be directly hitting you.
  4. Bug spray. This really only applies to certain areas, but if your session takes place in a heavy bug area such as the woods, or a nighttime session, bring your bug spray!
  5. Dress accordingly. Avoid black clothing if you can, but especially avoid tight fitting clothing as it can be super hot and uncomfortable.
  6. Take breaks. During summer sessions, I always set aside extra time for breaks because the heat can be dangerous.

Themed ideas

The Beach

While this list isn't state-specific, I'm currently writing this in a sand covered notebook on the hood of my car overlooking the boardwalk in Virginia Beach. (Ideas strike at the strangest time). When you think summer, you think the beach. And that's where some of my favorite sessions take place. Early morning maternity at sunrise, seductive couples session in the water at sunset, and family photos in the sand. The beautiful backdrop of the ocean makes for breathtaking photos.

Concerts

While outdoor concerts happen year round, there is something about summer concerts that just make it so much more lively. To make some awesome memories and really capture your personalities, I would recommend this idea for the outgoing couples who love music, being outdoors, and parties.

Theme Park

Who else loves roller coasters? Because not me. While I am no adrenaline junkie, I love theme parks and am perfectly happy holding the bags while watching everyone else drop from 200 feet in the air. I truly enjoy the experience of different foods, learning new things, and watching my friends have a blast. But this idea came to me whilst I was indeed holding my sister's bag at Busch Gardens and saw this adorable couple taking a photo. Theme parks can provide so many unique backdrops with endless things to do, you won't have time to stop and think "what do i do with my hands" while taking a photo!

Carnival

Similar to theme parks, carnivals, while typically much smaller, give you so many things to do. They are perfect for couples, individuals and families looking to have a fun session while enjoying the warm, evening air and the smell of popcorn. They also make a beautiful backdrop at night!

Now if your not into large crowded areas, or are spending most of your summer working (I've been there, I get it) There are tons of other ways to incorporate "Summer" into your photos. You could utilize fun props like bicycles, classic cars, flowers, and baskets. And accessories like hats and sunglasses. Some other ideas include:

  • Blowing bubbles
  • Colorful fruits
  • Sparklers
  • Pools
  • Bonfires
  • Rain
  • Picnics
  • Colorful clothing

What to wear

As stated previously, we definetely want to avoid black/dark clothing as it attracts the heat. Also avoid tight fitted clothing, which will make you more uncomfortable.

Here's a list of clothing items that are suitable for a summer photo session, keeping comfort and style in mind:

  1. Lightweight sundress: Opt for breathable fabrics like cotton or linen in a bright or pastel color.
  2. Flowy blouse and shorts: Pair a loose, airy blouse with comfortable shorts for a relaxed look.
  3. Linen pants: Lightweight linen pants are stylish and breathable, perfect for cooler evenings.
  4. Maxi skirt: A flowing maxi skirt in a floral or patterned print adds elegance and comfort.
  5. Short-sleeve button-up shirt: Choose a linen or cotton shirt for a classic, casual look.
  6. Tank top and midi skirt: A sleeveless top with a midi skirt keeps you cool while looking chic.
  7. Romper: A one-piece romper in a lightweight material is easy to wear and photograph.
  8. Strappy sandals: Comfortable sandals or espadrilles that complement your outfit.
  9. Wide-brimmed hat: Not only stylish but also provides sun protection during outdoor shoots.
  10. Sunglasses: Complete your look with a stylish pair of shades for a summery vibe.

Remember to choose light colors and breathable fabrics to stay cool and comfortable throughout your photo session!

Staying safe

Heat Stroke symptoms

"Heat stroke is strongly related to the heat index, which is a measurement of how hot you feel when the effects of relative humidity and air temperature are combined. A relative humidity of 60% or more hampers sweat evaporation, which hinders your body's ability to cool itself.

The risk of heat-related illness dramatically increases when the heat index climbs to 90 degrees or more. So it's important -- especially during heat waves -- to pay attention to the reported heat index, and also to remember that exposure to full sunshine can increase the reported heat index by 15 degrees." - WebMD

This applies especially to Virginia, where we have strong humidity and high heat indexes. It can feel nice in the morning, and while your outside the heat can really sneak up on you. Know the symptoms so you can act faster.

  • Throbbing headache
  • Dizziness and light-headedness
  • Lack of sweating despite the heat
  • Red, hot, and dry skin
  • Muscle weakness or cramps
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Rapid heartbeat, which may be either strong or weak
  • Rapid, shallow breathing
  • Behavioral changes such as confusion, disorientation, or staggering
  • Seizures
  • Unconsciousness

Remember to know the signs. Enjoy this summer and stay safe!
